What is myofunctional therapy?
The therapy focuses on improving muscle tone, strength, coordination and tongue mobility to ensure the correct tongue resting position and proper swallowing pattern and nasal breathing.
What is the goal of therapy?
It is advisable to start myofunctional therapy as soon as the first symptoms appear to prevent any further complications.
How does therapy work?
Therapy is a collaboration between the therapist and the patient. I will provide you with the necessary exercises and equipment for daily independent therapy between our sessions.
Snoring
Snoring mostly occurs due to mouth breathing, which has several causes, such as obstruction to nasal breathing, improper positioning of the tongue and lower jaw, etc. This can lead to sleep apnoea if it gets worse.
Stress and anxiety
Over 40% of the population sleeps with their mouths open and snores on a nightly basis. The lack of oxygen causes a physical crisis, which makes it impossible to get high-quality sleep. Lack of quality sleep is the number one factor causing increased levels of stress and anxiety.
Bite
Bite problems can cause a variety of health issues, including pain and tension in the head, neck, shoulder and back. It also increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease and may cause speech and breathing problems.
Bruxism
Bruxism, or teeth grinding, leads to a number of health problems, including tooth wear and muscle tension in the head and neck.
Long-term bruxism can damage your teeth, cause chronic headaches and affect your sleep quality.
Headaches
Oral health issues such as bruxism (teeth grinding), sleep apnoea or poor dental health could be the cause of your (morning) headaches. We will determine the cause of your headaches and find the most suitable treatment.
Swallowing
Difficulty swallowing can be caused by weakness or dysfunction of the tongue or pharyngeal muscles. Difficulty swallowing can also be caused by dental problems, dry mouth or diseases of the oral mucosa.
Functional recovery is for people of all ages
Children
Young people
Adults
What does the treatment process look like?
At the initial consultation, I will provide you with comprehensive information about the therapy, including its possibilities, suitability, duration and cost. If it meets your expectations and needs, we will get to work on drawing a detailed treatment plan.
At this visit you will receive your first myofunctional aligner, and I will provide you with all the instructions you need to be able to carry out the therapy independently on a daily basis. We will meet every few weeks. The first stage lasts two to four months.
Visits during therapy will be scheduled based on the treatment plan and depending on its progress. We will agree on these as we go.
Each stage will be planned based on the treatment plan and depending on its progress. At the beginning of each stage, you will receive a myofunctional aligner, and I will provide you with all the instructions you need to be able to carry out the therapy independently on a daily basis.
Therapy will be stopped once the proper functions have been restored.

If started in childhood, myofunctional therapy can be especially effective in preventing orthodontic problems. The best time for therapy is generally during the active growth phase between the ages of six and ten.
Myofunctional therapy is for people of all ages and is suitable for anyone who understands how the therapy works and is able to follow the instructions correctly. I also integrate therapy with orthodontic treatment for older children and adults to avoid any problems during the course of treatment and to maintain the results.
The goal of therapy is to restore functions and prevent problems. The therapy addresses issues such as mouth breathing, teeth grinding and sleep disturbances, excessive salivating and atypical swallowing, among other things.
Therapy takes place regularly in three to four stages, and the desired outcomes are usually achieved in one to two years, depending on the age and involvement of the patient and the nature of the problem.
